Albury Big Freeze Event Smashes Fundraising Goal for FightMND

Albury’s support for the Big Freeze initiative was on full display on June 6, as more than 150 people gathered at the Albury Swim Centre for a fun-filled, heartfelt event that raised crucial funds for FightMND. The local event, held in partnership with the iconic Big Freeze campaign, smashed its $5,000 fundraising goal—bringing in an impressive total of $8,317.

Over 150 locals attended on the day, with various sliders plunging down the iconic Albury water slide into icy waters, in creative costumes adding to the fun.

This included a variety of superhero outfits, as well as the best dressed male Matt Vyner from the Murray Crays Football Club. Popular local swimming pool member Sue Sherwill dressed in her best 80’s retro costume, was judged the best dressed female.

Siblings and Albury Wodonga Aquatic Facilities staff members Tayla and Lochlan Farrelly fought it out to see who could last in the ice bath the longest, with a record time of 15 minutes achieved.

The two-hour spectacle alone saw $2,500 in on-the-day donations, reflecting the overwhelming generosity of the local community.

Among those braving the cold was Richmond AFLW coach Ryan Ferguson, who was in the Border region as part of Richmond Football Club’s AFLW community camp.

Ferguson, who has coached the Tigers’ women’s side since 2021, also has a noteworthy connection to the FightMND cause, having previously played under Big Freeze pioneer Neale Daniher during his five-years at Melbourne.

This year’s Big Freeze event wouldn’t have been possible without the support of generous local sponsors. Businesses including Smiths Ice, Blazing Stump Hotel, Zoggs, Back Beach Co, Arnolds Fruit Market Wodonga, and Richmond Football Club played vital roles by contributing donations and resources to make the day a success.

With the buzz still alive in the community, organisers have already begun planning for an even bigger event next year. Local businesses are showing strong interest in getting involved in 2026, keen to build on the momentum and make an even greater impact in the fight against Motor Neurone Disease. This local Big Freeze event not only raised vital funds but also brought the community together in support of a cause that touches lives across Australia.
