Aquatics and Recreation Victoria Awards – Sustainability Award

Cardinia Life was recognised as a Finalist at the 2020 Aquatic & Recration Victoria (ARV) Awards, held on Monday 26 October.

The centre was noted in the Sustainability Award category for its considerable energy and water saving efforts across the past four years.

Cardinia Life is now delivering over 15 projects on its substantial assets to considerably improve the environmental footprint made by the facility.

From the period June 2016 to August 2019, the avoided greenhouse gas emissions made by Cardinia Life have totalled 225 tCO2-e, which is the equivalent of taking 50 cars off the road.

Water savings in the same reporting period reduced water consumption by 75 per cent, a saving of over 30,000 litres per day.

These outcomes led to almost $190,000 in utility savings to the budget.

Cardinia Leisure Manager, Paige Kristalyn, said that staff were incredibly proud of the sustainability achievements made in the last four years.

“Our sustainability focus, in partnership with Cardinia Shire Council, has led to significant energy and water savings,” she said.

“Our efforts culminated in engaging AG Coombs to conduct an energy audit and identify further opportunities to improve environmental outcomes. We thank AG Coombs for their commitment to our sustainability efforts.

“We would also like to congratulate Brimbank City Council for winning the award this year.”

Cardinia Shire Council Acting Manager Active Communities, Michael Casey, said he was proud of the achievements made by Cardinia Life over the last four years, leading to substantial environmental outcomes.

“Council’s investment in asset upgrades in recent years and Aligned Leisure’s continual focus on environmental outcomes has led to these outstanding results,” he said.

“The energy audit conducted by AG Coombs has further assisted us in determining further investment and where there are low hanging fruit opportunities.

“We are incredibly proud to be recognised as a Finalist in the ARV awards this year.”
